The type and size of lenses perform important role in determining what video is captured by the camera. But the big question is this how to choose CCTV Camera Lenses. It is essential that your CCTV adviser  or you, choose the right lens for the job. There is some basic instruction for choosing lenses.

Vari-focal or Fixed lens 

• A Fixed camera lens means the camera lens cannot be zoomed. Fixed lens are generally less costly so can be a good option for fixed area such as a room in a house.
• A Vari-Focal camera lens can be adjusted by CCTV technician manually, you can focus it on exactly the area that you wish to record. It has flexibility to be adjusted at a later date if the area layout or your requirements change. 

The effect of lens size and distance

The size of the CCTV camera lens will affect the viewing angle of what the camera sees. The distance the security camera is mounted from the object also affects what image is recorded. The examples below show the same area captured by two common fixed lens sizes – 3.6mm and 12mm – and three different distances.

2.Select the type of camera: You should select camera that is best for you. Do you need Analog, wireless or IP camera. Now days most security cameras are indoor/outdoor and have an IR (Infrared) cut filter for night vision(In night vision view will be in Black & White).

3. Camera Chip Imaging Type and Quality: CCTV cameras produce image using CMOS or CCD(Charge Couple Double) chips. Old and low price camera usually use CMOS chip technology it produce low quality video with very poor light sensitivity. Good manufacturer are using CCD technology for better video result. CCD chip size is normally 1/4'', 1/3" or 1/2". As a thumb rule the larger size, the higher density 1/4" and 1/3" CCD chips can now produce  as an image as many older 1/3" or 1/2" chips.

4. Know about Light Level: Light level is most important specification on CCTV camera with good light control you can not get good image. Light levels are measured in Lux. The lower the number, The less light it will take to reproduce good image.

5.Know about Resolution: Resolution effects your CCTV image. Resolution level are measured in TVL or T.V. Lines (for Analog camera) and MP or Megapixel (for IP camera). Analog camera entry level resolution is 300 lines, high resolution cameras producing better than 400 lines.

6. Select Monitor: Select a monitor that will match the resolution of your CCTV camera system.

7. Choose Recorder: If you are looking for analog camera you require DVR (Digital Video Recorder). Now days DVR available with HD output.
